Week5: Science

Week5

Because 2010 Shanghai World Exposition is the latest world expostion till now, it includes many different kind of scientific research and results.

Scientific calculations and methods of measurment is very important for making all the technology effects efficient and precise. Bailianjing (a river in Shanghai) near Expo site was treated with natural ecological restoration technology by scientists, so that it has self-purification, self-regulating, self-balancing features.[1] The "eco-intelligent building technology" research project based on the results of the "eco-house in Shanghai - Shanghai eco-building model building", as our physical case selected for the Shanghai World Expo, is a comprehensive integrated application and show for nergy conservation, resource recycling,  and other technologies.[2] It reduced carbon dioxide emissions throughout the year for 140 tons, which is an energy saving over 60%.[3] This will lead the future direction of development in ecological building. In terms of a larger scale, scientists have implimented varioud devices for Wordl Exposition Shanghai, such as the "cool temperature" technology research, the natural wind tunnel design, the use of functional materials and water features, mist refreshing, and many other proposed solution.

Scientifice researches can also be observed from the safety and health aspects. Highlighting the people-oriented, safe and healthy concept, science and technology research organization focused on food security, emergency prevention and other aspects of food testing.  By building the public facilities in the computer in three-dimensional scenes, scientists simulated the flow of movement and sudden disasters occur during the World Expo, in order to respond to possible emergencies. This provide a scientifically reliable and efficient means of supporting analysis. Scientists focused on food pathogens, toxic and harmful substances, such as rapid field detection of genetically modified organisms, and they have successfully developed a number of food safety testing products. Shanghai World Expo site and surrounding areas will take those researches into consideration. Also, for safety, the face image capture and matching systems in the Shanghai World Expo site entrance and all the important sites, achieved 24-hour surveillance, through the face recognition technology to ensure the park’s safety.

In the operational management of the Expo, the organizers focused on traffic management inside and outside the park, distribution of high-strength passenger safety and guidance, multi-language information, and publishing scientific and technological innovation. "Shanghai Expo comprehensive and integrated intelligent transportation systems technology" project has been completed, so traffic management in Shanghai was an integrated application of information technology, intelligent control technology to ensure the rush hour. Shanghai World Expo will be held during the smooth flow of traffic provided by technical support.

Technology was an important aspect of 2010 Shanghai World Exposition. Among thousands of new technology implications, environmental friendly technology is the most important one since Shanghai World Expo emphasis protecting the environment during the process of urbanism a lot.

First of all, in terms of planning and construction of the Expo, it highlights greening, eco-friendly energy, harmony and the concept of livable, which altogether formed a modern systerm of suitable construction of Shanghai World Expo. China Pavilion design and construction are integrated with ecological devices, ice storage, water reuse, rainwater recycling, green building materials and other new technologies. The maximum use of natural light and solar power for lighting, achieves China Pavilion’s all electricity self-sufficiency goal.[1] Construction of the Expo Axis combines large-span cable-membrane structure, million LED, river water and geothermal heating pumps, large-scale video curvy displaying screens, underground space technology, disaster prevention, and many other integrated applications. Also, many other countries pavilion used solar panels for electricity generation, and by doing this, it reduces hundreds of tons of carbon dioxide per year.

Another important thing for enviromental technology is the use of renewable energy. Low-carbon Green Expo highlights the concept of focusing on clean energy technology research, and demonstraing the use of technology to meet energy saving requirements. During Shanghai Expo time, the expositioning site together with the surrounding area carried out 200 fossil fuel generating vehicles, 380 electrified vehicles, 500 hybrid vehicles, etc.[2] It was the world's largest new energy vehicles commercial operation model in history. Shanghai Expo’s area of solar power capacity will reach 450MW, to achieve the current domestic and Asia's largest building-integrated photovoltaic power generation systems, which is 7.5 times of that in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.[3] The first 34 3MW wind turbine is China's first national offshore wind power demonstration project.[4]

One more thing I would like to point out is Japan Pavilion. They brought around 34 new kinds of robots to Shanghai World Exposition, which are the most advanced kind of robots in the world in 2010.[5]

Week3: Race and Ethnicity

Week3:

There are no particular race or ethics problems in 2010 Shanghai World Exposition. Its main theme is harmony between man and nature, and harmony among human themselves. Among 250 countries’ participation, African countries made an important contribution.

African Joint Pavilion building is 26,000 square meters, covering an area equivalent to three and a half standard size soccer field. It is the largest among 11 Shanghai World Expo joint pavilions. The interior hall’s height is 9 meters, and each country’s exhibiting room covers an area of 250 square meters. [1]The joint pavilion has 43 separate exhibiting rooms, which are for 42 African countries and the African Union.[2] The 2010 Shanghai World Expo has the largest number of African countries participating in the world exposition history. [3]

African joint pavilion shows the world the qualities of a true Africa, so that more people know and love Africa. It is the common aspiration of the Expo organizers that the world get to know more and more about how is the life and what are people’s notions in Africa. Nuo Lana • tower • Armagh is on behalf of the African Diplomatic Corps to the Chinese Government and the ShanghaiWorld Expo organizers’ effort to assist African countries in Shanghai World Expo exhibitions.[4] He said that China, as the first registered developing country for the World Expo, so it is a historical event and moment for all the developing countries all over the world.[5] To reflect the diversity of the African continent, Africa joint pavilion and will provide a different variety of African cultural activities into the Shanghai World Expo, which will allow people to understand the African way of life, and promote cooperations with African countries and the world.

It is reported that African Joint Pavilion of Shanghai World Expo Promotion Week is from September 25 until October 7.[6] To do the publicity week, the Shanghai World Expo Bureau has also produced a special brochure of African Joint Pavilion Zhuanban.

Week2: Economics

As China’s GDP in 2010 became the world’s second largest, more and more people from all over the world started to realize its potential. Shanghai World Expo is a chance for China to show the world what is really happening there, at the same time, a stage for Chinese people to know their own nation well.

China is the number one energy consumption country in the world, which is five times of that in Japan, so Shanghai Expo focused a lot more on low carbon lifestyle, renewable energy, and other climate energy challenge.

Before Shanghai World Expo, the real estate of Shanghai was in a very high price and good condition. Great companies both domestically and worldwide came and invested in Shanghai. And Chinese people also valued the real estate conditions in Shanghai would be wonderful during the Expo and after it, so they bought houses and apartments around there, and tried to rent them during that time, or just simply do some small business. Many new hotels were built around 2008 and 2009, and they turned out to be extremely successful in business when the Expo was been held.

At the beginning of the Expo, many people questioned if it's going be a successful expo in financial aspect at all, since few people were there.  The eve of the World Expo, Shanghai residents have been talking about a surprise: each Shanghai residential household will receive a ticket, a value of 200RMB traffic card, a map, a small Expo badge, and a Expo mascot Hai Bao. Local media have made a report on the matter, and quoted Yu Hansheng, the priminister for Shanghai city as saying, this to "thank the people for the World Expo Shanghai contribution." Rough calculations, the process does not include payment of costs incurred, the "appreciation list" will cost about 1.8 billion RMB.[1] For the huge Expo budget, 1.8 billion yuan (same as RMB) is not that much. According to official report, World Expo Park stadium construction costs 18 billion yuan, and the operating expenses is 10.6 billion RMB; Expo Land relocation investment is $40 yuan; and outside the Expo venue supporting projects costs more than hundreds of billions yuan.[2]

So where does all that money come from?

For the construction cost, which is18 billion yuan, the Shanghai municipal government made such an arrangement: the government invested 7.15 billion yuan, accounting for 40% of the amount invested; the central government approved the issuance of 8 billion yuan World Expo bonds, investment accounts for about 44%; the remaining 2.85 billion yuan is supplemented by a variety of financing methods.[3]

Shanghai Municipal Government has set up two state-owned company, as Expo District construction projects operating entities: Shanghai World Expo Land Holding Co., Ltd. (later referred to as the World Expo soil control) and the Shanghai World Expo (Group) Co., Ltd. (later referred to as the World Expo Group).[4] These two companies have issued debt Expo, by Industrial and Commercial Bank and Construction Bank to provide guarantees, and was quickly share a few insurance companies. Expo Group in April 2005 bonds 8 billion yuan, Expo land control is made twice a debt of 30 billion yuan and 40 billion yuan,  with a 10-year annual interest rate of 4%.[5]

For operating expenses of $ 10.6 billion, is entirely through the market raising funds. Shanghai World Expo, the overall financial revenue is estimated at 9.61 billion yuan, including ticket sales, sponsorship, licensing, venue rental, etc.To the Expo Bureau announced 70 million visitors estimated, because of the system of given free tickets once its opened officially, to 160 yuan per ticket pricing, ticket sales more than tens of billion yuan.[6]

Expo Bureau also revealed that sponsorship has raised to 70 million, mainly from the Shanghai World Expo's global partners and senior sponsors, respectively, 13 and 14. In addition to Coca-Cola, Siemens, IBM and Cisco, the rest are more than 20 state-owned enterprises. The specific contribution each sponsor how much business with the Expo Bureau were not public information. Some media reports, Coca-Cola Company as a global partner, out of 500 million yuan sponsorship fee, not including advertising expenses. China Eastern Airlines is the first contract with the sponsor of the Expo Bureau, "financial" reporter learned from Eastern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines is the main provider of air passenger and freight Expo special services.[7]

Licensed retail sales, not to be underestimated is the amount of income. As of last year, more than 180 licensed products manufacturer Expo, 8000 a variety of goods, achieved sales of 3.1 billion. Shanghai World Expo Coordination Bureau of Business Management Services Minister Lin Sheng Yong said the Expo area of the retail public areas up to 1.05 billion.

Expo venue construction costs may be far more than official 180 billion.Control of bank loans Expo soil conditions or for support. April 2004, the Shanghai World Expo signed the first cooperation between banks, Commercial Bank of China, Pudong Development Bank, Bank of Shanghai World Expo Land control to provide a total of 5.5 billion yuan loan. In addition, in the Expo area to step up the construction of 2008 World Expo Land Bank to raise funds controlled $ 12.5 billion, 4 billion yuan of insurance funds to implement the use of 4 billion yuan trust fund, also received the government 600 million yuan working capital reserve of the land transferred. In addition, the new syndicated credit facility agreement signed $ 50 billion.

Shanghai the leaders said in an interview, the Expo will be dependent on the input to the development of land use solutions.Shanghai World Expo site planning of land range is 5.28 square kilometers, of which the Pudong section of 3.93 square kilometers, the Puxi part of the 1.35 square kilometers.[8] Shanghai is able to comfortably achieve "balance in economics", mainly because of the Expo land appreciation going up high. Bare in mind that the complete infrastructure of Shanghai Expo after the end is 5.28 square kilometers of land.

Week1: China Pavilion

For my first week of blog, I would like to talk about the China Pavilion at Shanghai Expo in 2010. As China is becoming more and more international with high economic growth, more worldwide fairs are been held in China since 21st century. It's a great opportunity for the world to get to know more about this mysterious oriental nation, the largest country in Asia. The theme of Shanghai Expo is “Better City, Better life”, the first theme about urban and low carbon city lifestyle among all the other world expos been held before.
Chinese government collected thousands of plans for the Chinese pavilion and at the end engineer Jingtang He’s plan, “The Crown of the East” won because it’s not just a traditional Chinese cultural architecture nor a purely modern building with high technology, but a great combination of the two. Jingtang He presented the pavilion with distinctive roof made of traditional dougong or brackets, which date back more than 2000 years, the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC- 467 BC). The dougong style features wooden brackets fixed layer upon layers between top of a column and a crossbeam. This unique structural component of interlocking wooden brackets is one of the most important techniques in traditional Chinese architecture.
The exterior wall and roof of  “The Crown of the East” is made of a kind of special glass which can transform solar energy to electricity, and at the same time allow natural sun light to get into the pavilion. The display of this pavilion is mainly focused on the urban development of China from ancient to modern times. It had a core exhibition area on the top floor, an experience area on the second and a functional area on the first. The most famous exhibition piece at this pavilion is the animated version of “Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival”, an illustration of the charms of ancient Chinese cities.

Although the pavilion supposed to be temporary, it became such a symbol of future urban Chinese architecture that the government decided to keep it. The exterior remained the same; however, the original exhibition inside the pavilion has been changed since 2010, and different new displays have been put on to the public periodically.  During this past summer of 2011, the pavilion displayed a show about animations and cartoons which young people enjoyed a lot, and a carnival was held next to the pavilion, which as a whole created a new great place for students to visit during long summer vacation.

This blue color dominated character is the mascot of Shanghai World Expo 2010. Its name is HAIBAO, the precious presence of the world. Created from the Chinese character “”, which means people, the mascot embodies the character of Chinese culture and echoes with the designing concept of the emblem of Shanghai World Expo, using three human bodies to present the character “”, the world. The structure of “”, in which two strokes support each other, manifested the concept that a wonderful balanced life between city and nature should be created by all human beings. Since Chinese characters were derived from pictographic writing used in ancient times, it’s also a great innovation and smart solution by using Chinese character as the mascot.
